How to Search Aiken Traffic Court Records

The SC traffic ticket search at sccourts.org allows you to search for Aiken area citations by citation number, driver's license number, or name and date of birth. This statewide portal covers summary court and some municipal court records across all 46 South Carolina counties. The SC case records search gives access to cases by party name, case number, or filing date and covers Aiken County circuit court records as well.

The court can confirm your case status, court date, and fine amount over the phone during business hours. Have your citation number and driver's license number available when you call.

Note: The public index is updated nightly, so recently filed cases may not appear until the following business day.

Paying Aiken Traffic Citations

Traffic fines from Aiken Municipal Court can be paid in person at 111 Chesterfield Street South during business hours, by mail using certified check or money order, or online through approved payment channels. The court accepts cash, certified checks, money orders, and credit and debit cards. Personal checks may not be accepted. Call the court to confirm current payment methods before mailing a payment.

The state SC.GOV portal at sc.gov provides online payment for eligible traffic citations handled in South Carolina summary courts and some municipal courts. A convenience fee applies to card transactions through the portal. If your Aiken citation is eligible for online payment, it will appear in the system when you search by citation number or driver's license.

Citations marked "Appearance Required" on the face of the ticket cannot be paid without appearing before the Municipal Court Judge. Appearing gives you the option to contest the charge or ask for a reduction. Under Section 56-5-6220 of South Carolina law, paying a ticket without appearing is treated as a guilty plea and results in a conviction on your driving record.

Aiken Citations and Your Driving Record

Every traffic conviction from Aiken Municipal Court is reported to the SC DMV. The DMV posts points to your record based on the violation type. Reckless driving and passing a stopped school bus each carry six points. Speeding 10 to 25 mph over the limit carries four points. Minor violations carry two points. Your record reflects these points for two years from the violation date.

Points are cut in half after one year. At 12 or more points, your license is automatically suspended. The suspension period depends on total points accumulated. Drivers with four or fewer points can take a certified defensive driving course to remove up to four points once every three years. The SC DMV points system page has the full list of point values by violation type.

Your current driving record is available from the SC DMV for $6.00. Both three-year and ten-year versions are available. The three-year record is sufficient for most personal purposes. The ten-year record is often required for commercial driving jobs or certain employment background checks.

Contesting an Aiken Traffic Citation

You have the right to contest a traffic citation by appearing in Aiken Municipal Court on your scheduled court date. When you appear, you can enter one of four pleas: forfeiture (pay the fine), not guilty, guilty, or no contest. Entering a not guilty plea starts the court process for your case. The judge will schedule a trial date where the issuing officer must be present.

At trial, you can present evidence, cross-examine the officer, and explain the circumstances. If the officer does not appear, the case may be dismissed. If you are found guilty at trial, the conviction goes on your record. If you win, the charge is dismissed and no points are assessed. Talk to the court clerk when you arrive for guidance on how the hearing process works in Aiken Municipal Court.

For serious charges like DUI or driving under suspension, a mandatory court appearance is required. These cases cannot be resolved by fine payment alone. The Municipal Court Judge in Aiken has authority to impose fines up to $500 and imprisonment up to 30 days for city ordinance violations under state law.

Note: If you miss your court date without contacting the court, a bench warrant may be issued and your license suspension process may begin within 15 days.
